The Problems that take people to psychiatrists for treatment are of 2 kinds : those that seem to have their origins largely in the remote past of patients lives and those that seem to arise largely the patients conscious control. However, current external stresses may occur in combination with order problems and some patients who have old but still active and unsolved problems may arrange their lives in such a heavy that they appear to be a victim of current life situations. The relationship between emotional and psychological factors and various medical disorders has attracted increasing attention. It is more well recognized that psychological factors have considerable influence on the causation of certain stress related medical disorders. Physicians and surgeons have also been unease that many patients under their care have considerable psychiatric symptoms as also psychological problems that are linked to their physical disorders. Thus evolved the concept of a partnership between the physicians and the psychiatrist in helping patients with medical and surgical condition in which psychological factors play an important role.
Psychiatric services are provided to both out patients and in-patients. In addition there are referrals from various departments of Internal medicine,cardiology, endocrinology and Diabetics, Nephrology, Neurology, Neuro-Surgery, OBG and others for Psychiatric and Psycho-social interventions. Psychiatric unit consists of two consultant Psychiatrist and a Psychiatric Social Work.

Various psychological techniques are employed in the treatment of psychiatric Disorders. Their aim is not only symptom relief but also better adaptation,leading onto improvement in social and vocational functioning and personality growth. A wide array of psychological approaches (therapies) are employed in practice and when used in combination with pharmacological approach can enhance the outcome in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. Psychiatric interviews are conducted to gather relevant information to help the clinician to arrive at an appropriate diagnosis and also to understand the psychological problems of the individual on the backdrop of his own personal life circumstances.

Psychotherapy : It is a treatment by communication; any form of treatment for mental illness, behavioral maldaptations and or other problems that are assumed to be of an emotional nature. Offers the patient support by an authority figure during period of illness, turmoil or temporary decompensation. It also has the goal of restoring and strengthening the patients defenses and integrating capacities that have been impaired. It provides a period of acceptance and dependence for a patient who is in need of help in dealing with guilt, shame anxiety and in meeting the frustration or the external pressures that may be too great to handle.
Marital therapy : is a form psychotherapy designed to psychologically modify the interaction of two people who are in conflict with each other over one parameter or variety of parameters, social, emotional, sexual, economic.
Family therapy : emphasizes the role symptoms play in maintaining a dysfunctional or pathological family system. It focuses on the structuring of interaction patterns that have been dysfunctional and Efforts are being made towards conflict resolution.
Alcohol detoxification and treatment : The process of withdrawing a person from an addictive substance in a safe and effective manner. In a person with a pattern of heavy or prolonged drinking symptoms develop within hours of cessation of drinking or of signification reduction in amount ingested hand tremor and a variety of other signs and symptoms that may include nausea and vomiting : anxiety autonomic hyperactivity manifested in sweating and increased pulse rate, agitation, insomnia, perceptual disturbances such as transient visual, tactile or auditory illusions or hallucinations with reality testing and at times seizures.
Electro Convulsive Therapy : is a very useful method in the treatment of severe depressive disorder specially in those with psychotic symptoms, schizophrenia and mania. The major advantage of ECT is that it provides rapid relief of symptoms which may be indicated to patients who are extremely suicidal and in those with severe psycho motor retardation.
